Visit Ghost Towns

At the turn of the century, little settlements popped up in the shadows of mining claims, hidden deep in the mountains. Today they are some of the most beautifully interesting treasures in our county. The character of the log shacks, stone chimneys and rough roads paint a picture of a hard and simple life. From Pitkin, drive Cumberland Pass to Tin Cup on your way to Taylor Reservoir or visit Sommerset, Almont, Gothic and Marble- the source of the stone used to construct the Lincoln Memorial. North of Crested Butte, the Crystal Mill remains the quinticential land mark of the period. Photographers have gravitated to it for almost a century.
