You'll probably
find yourself becoming a ghost-town buff, exploring the relics in St.
Elmo and Tin Cup; and visiting the fascinating old silver mines. The recorded
past of this area tells a rich and colorful saga of Colorado's pioneer beginnings.

In
Pitkin, one of Colorado's original mining towns, you can
still see the old railroad depot and water tank; and follow the rail route
to the historic Alpine Tunnel.
Pitkin's original assay office, livery stable and pool hall also remain standing. |
For campers,
hikers, RV owners and nature-lovers, Quartz Creek is a
paradise of unspoiled
scenic beauty. All around is some of the best hunting and fishing in
Colorado.
There's excellent trout fishing in nearby Quartz Creek, Blue Mesa and
Taylor Park reservoirs...plus boating and water
skiing. |
Crested Butte
and Monarch ski areas offer incomparable powder skiing only 1—1˝ hours
away.
Pitkin, with 90 people year-round, offers many facilities; and Gunnison, 26 miles southwest, is the thriving home of Western State College. Its population of 5,000 offers many additional services. Everything you need is close by. Gunnison airport is less than 30 miles. Everything you don't need—like crowds, smog and traffic—is a million miles away. |
